Becoming a U.S. Citizen Through Naturalization
Naturalization is the process through which an eligible lawful permanent resident may become a U.S. citizen.
Eligibility requirements vary depending on the applicant’s individual circumstances and the naturalization category under which they are applying. In general, applicants may be required to:
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing.
- Have been a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) for the required period, generally three or five years depending on the applicable category.
- Meet the continuous residence and physical presence requirements in the United States.
- Demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, and understand basic English, unless an exception applies.
- Demonstrate good moral character.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government (civics), unless an exception applies.
- Demonstrate attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
- Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
Naturalization Through Military Service
Current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces may qualify for naturalization under special provisions of U.S. immigration law. Certain residency, physical presence, and other requirements may differ depending on the applicant’s military service and individual circumstances.
