When a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident petitioning for the family member does not meet the USCIS income requirement, the Form I-864A must need to be file.

Form I-1864a, issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is actually a contract between two people with an interest in the life of an incoming U.S. immigrant: the immigrant’s U.S. sponsor and another family member living in the same household or among the main sponsor’s dependents.

The form itself is meant as an attachment to the main I-864 Affidavit of Support that nearly all U.S. family petitioners/sponsors of immigrants are required to fill out and sign. The form I-864A, contract between the sponsor and household member, is an attachment to form I-864 that serves as an agreement between the sponsor of an immigrant to the U.S. and a member who lives in the same household who is willing to provide financial support for the immigrant. 

By signing the I-864a, the household member or dependent makes his or her income available to the main sponsor to support the intending immigrant. This helps in a situation where the primary petitioner does not have enough income or assets to sponsor the immigrant alone. By completing Form, I-864A, the member of the household or dependent allows his or her income to be used by the immigrant’s primary sponsor to meet the financial requirement.
